Why take childbirth classes?
I believe the purpose of childbirth education is to inform mothers and their partners of their birthing options, what normal labor and delivery is and how to achieve it along with exploring different relaxation techniques. Moms deserve to be fully informed about where they can give birth, the process of childbirth, common interventions they may encounter, and how to work with their caregivers to achieve the best outcomes for mother and baby. The more knowledge a woman has, the better her birth experience will be.
What types of classes do you teach?
I am currently offering 2 different classes including my Introduction to Pregnancy class and my Pregnancy, Labor and Beyond class. Please see the course descriptions for more information.
Introduction to Pregnancy
This class if for moms and their partners who are newly pregnant and couples trying to conceive. Newly pregnant moms have so many questions and often feel overwhelmed with information. It's a good idea to take an
introduction to pregnancy class because many moms report discovering
valuable information too late in their pregnancy and wish they had this
type of information as soon as they found out they were pregnant. This class is a great way for you to meet local moms that are expecting the same time you are!
Topics include:
- Choosing where to give birth
- Choosing your birth team
- Prenatal testing
- Pregnancy nutrition and exercise
The class runs from 2-3 hours and the fee is $25 per couple. If you decide to hire me on as your doula, the $25 will be deducted from my doula retainer fee. Although this is not required reading, I highly recommend that each of my students read The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer
Pregnancy Labor and Beyond - Next class starting in September. Only a couple spots left!
This is a 6 week course with each class running about 2 hours. It is dedicated to moms and their partners who are looking to have a natural childbirth in a hospital, birth center or at home. It's important for moms and dads to connect to other parents so I have included social time in each class along with a reunion class where all couples can bring their babies and share their birth story. I am certified through Childbirth International and couples really enjoy the format of my class. I am not restricted to a "brand name" style of birthing and I am able to explore many different approaches to birth. Parents leave my class feeling like they are in control of their health care and fully prepared for birth.
Topics include:
- 3rd trimester nutrition and exercise
- Communicating with your health care team
- Signs of labor
- Stages of labor
- Comfort and relaxation techniques
- Pushing positions
- Ecstatic birth and the hormonal blueprint of labor
- Fear/Pain/Tension Cycle
- Breastfeeding
- Baby 101
This course is $250 per couple. $100 is due when you sign up to guarantee your spot in the class and the remaining $150 is due on the first day of class. This fee includes a course workbook and supplies. Students are not required to buy any books however, I highly recommend that all students read The Birth Partner and The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth. I only accept 4-5 couples in my
class so we can keep the environment a little more personal and give
each person the opportunity to discuss issues and ask questions.
I accept cash or check however, if you choose to pay by credit card, you now have the option of using pay pal.
Testimonials
"We are really glad that we decided to take your class. It was the motivation we needed to ask the RIGHT questions at our OB appointment. We have decided that we are changing caregivers and are interviewing midwives this week.
Even though I am a big researcher and felt like I knew a lot of what I needed to know, the things we have gone over in class with you have really helped solidify the importance of making sure that our birthing needs are being met. I have always been a people pleaser, so it was hard for me initially to ask questions at my OB appointment knowing that the answers could lead to disagreement. Our class has been just the environment I needed to push me in the direction I needed to go.
So thank you very much!!" -
